Continuing to try and reason with the daughter, in an effort to get her agreement, will do no good at this point. It will only prolong the debate. She may comply and not go to the movies, but there’s not much chance of her agreeing that no is the right answer. To break up this dance, Mark and Sarah would need to forget logical arguments and instead simply say no. They could also break up the dance by coming up with a totally illogical reason for saying no, such as, “No, you can’t go because the moon will be full that night” or “because we are terrible parents.” You can bet the daughter won’t disagree with that one. When you stop feeding it with reasons, the frustrating debate ends.
This routine is played out similarly in business. Let’s say that Corporate issues a new policy that you know your employees will detest. You also know that you have no choice about implementing this policy. You arm yourself against your employees’ protests with reasons for why they should like this policy, how pleased they should be that the company is thinking ahead, how good it will be for the department in the long run, yada yada yada. As you’d predicted, they spit back all the reasons as to why this policy is a real loser, that Corporate has no grip on reality, that you can’t possibly expect them to comply. You will continue the dance if you keep trying to talk them into liking the policy:
